Managed or unmanaged switch

Buy managed for any office with a camera recorder, a till or a server on the same wires — it is the only way to segment them and the only way to see which port is causing a problem. Unmanaged is fine for a home where nothing needs separating and nothing needs diagnosing.

What you cannot do without management

You cannot separate cameras from staff machines, cannot see which port is flooding the network, cannot limit a device, and cannot get statistics on anything. An unmanaged switch works perfectly until something goes wrong, at which point you have no visibility at all and diagnosis becomes unplugging cables one at a time.

Segmentation is the real reason

Cameras and recorders on one VLAN, staff on another, guests on a third, the till on its own. That is what stops one compromised laptop reaching the recorder, and it costs nothing but planning on a managed switch. Doing it later means re-addressing a live network, which is a far bigger job.

PoE, which often decides the purchase anyway

Cameras, access points and IP phones all take power over their data cable, and a PoE switch removes a power supply and a socket at every one of them. Most managed switches at this level include PoE, so the decision frequently makes itself once you count the devices that would otherwise need adapters.

The genuine cost of management

It costs more and it needs configuring, which means somebody has to understand it or pay someone who does. For a home with a handful of devices that overhead buys nothing. Being honest about that is important — plenty of offices are sold managed switches that are then left in their default state, which is an unmanaged switch at a higher price.

Do I need a managed network switch?

What is a VLAN and do I actually need one?

It splits one physical network into separate logical ones that cannot see each other. You need it if anything on your network should not be reachable from a staff laptop — a camera recorder, a till, a server. If everything on the network is equally trusted, you do not.

Can I add a managed switch to an existing network?

Yes, and it is a common upgrade — it drops in where the unmanaged switch was and works immediately in its default state. Segmentation is configured afterwards, which is where the real value is. Plan the addressing before you start rather than re-addressing a live network twice.

Do I need PoE?

If you have cameras, wireless access points or IP phones, almost certainly — it removes a power adapter and a socket at every device, and it lets you put access points where there is no power. If everything on the network has its own mains supply, it adds cost for nothing.

Rather have it done?

This is the equipment the whole network depends on: a router that routes, a managed switch that can be diagnosed, and a firewall with rules someone wrote deliberately. A small-office set installed and configured runs PKR 45,000 to 150,000, sized to how many devices you actually run.
