Solar with battery, or a generator

Choose solar with a battery for daily outages: it runs silently, costs nothing per hour, and cuts the bill as well. Keep a generator only where you must run heavy loads through long outages, because sizing a battery bank for air conditioning costs far more than fuel does.

The cost structures are opposite

A generator is cheap to buy and expensive to run — every hour burns fuel, and it needs servicing, oil and eventually an overhaul. Solar with storage is expensive to buy and nearly free to run. Which wins depends almost entirely on how many hours a year you actually need backup, and most households overestimate that number badly.

What each does well

Solar covers the essential circuit — lights, fans, fridge, internet, a TV — silently and automatically, with no fuel to fetch and no starting. A generator covers heavy loads: air conditioning, pumps, machinery. Batteries sized to run an AC through an evening cost several times a generator, which is the honest reason generators have not disappeared here.

The combination most homes end up with

Hybrid solar carrying the essential circuit for daily load-shedding, with a generator kept for the rare long outage or for running the ACs at a gathering. That arrangement uses each for what it is good at, and the generator's running hours drop so far that its fuel and servicing costs become trivial.

Things not in either price list

A generator is noise, exhaust and a fuel run, all of which matter in a dense sector where neighbours are close. Solar is a roof commitment and a system that needs occasional cleaning. Neither of these appears on a quotation, and both affect whether you are happy with the choice two years later.

Can solar run my air conditioner during load-shedding?

Only with a battery bank sized for it, which is expensive. An AC draws in an hour what the entire essential circuit draws in most of an evening. This is why the load split matters so much: back up lights, fans and the fridge on the battery, and if the ACs must run through outages, that is a generator's job.

Is a UPS a cheaper middle ground?

For a very small essential load and short cuts, yes — a UPS with a decent battery covers lights, fans and the internet for a fraction of a solar installation. What it does not do is reduce your bill, because it is charging from the grid. It is backup only, whereas hybrid solar is backup plus generation.

What about running the generator to charge the batteries?

Hybrid inverters generally accept a generator input and can charge from it, which is useful during a long winter overcast spell when solar yield is low. Configure it deliberately, though — a system set to charge from the generator whenever the battery dips will burn fuel replacing energy the sun would have supplied by mid-morning.

Rather have it done?

On-grid is cheapest and dies with the grid. Off-grid runs independently but needs a battery bank sized for the worst week of the year. Hybrid does both and is what most Islamabad households actually want. Choosing between them changes the price more than any other decision on a solar quote.
