What a standard fitting includes
Wall bracket, indoor mounting, a short lagged copper run, the drain with a proper fall, a genuine vacuum before gas is released, and measured commissioning figures. That last pair is what a cheap fitting skips, and skipping the vacuum is what quietly shortens a compressor's life — it is invisible on the day and expensive years later.
The three things that move the price
Pipe length beyond the standard allowance, core drilling through a structural wall rather than a partition, and an outdoor position needing access equipment or a heavy bracket. Ask which of the three apply to your job at the survey, because they are the difference between a quote and a final bill.
Supply and fit against fitting alone
Buying the unit yourself and paying for fitting separately makes the two costs visible, which is generally healthier. A bundled supply-and-fit price can be good value, but it hides how much of it is the fitting — and it is the fitting that determines whether the unit lasts, so it is the part worth scrutinising.
What a cheap fitting leaves out
No vacuum, unlagged pipe, a drain run flat, and no measured figures at handover. None of those show on installation day. All four show up within a season as water on the wall, poor cooling, or a unit that never quite performed. This is where the price gap between two fitting quotes almost always sits.

Because scope varies. Ask specifically about the vacuum, the pipe lagging, the drain fall and whether commissioning figures will be recorded. A quote that includes all four against one that includes none are different jobs, and the second is the one that produces a callout the following summer.

A standard allowance of lagged copper is normally included, with additional metres charged per metre. Confirm the allowance in the quote and measure the actual route, because the distance from indoor to outdoor position is the commonest reason a fitting price grows on the day.
Is installation included when I buy a new unit?
Often a basic fitting is bundled, and the question worth asking is what that basic fitting covers. Bundled installation is frequently the minimum: standard pipe, no allowance for a difficult route, and rarely any recorded commissioning. Knowing what is included is more useful than knowing whether it is free.
