Size from the room, not from habit
Tonnage comes from floor area, ceiling height, glazing, which way the room faces and how many people are in it. A west-facing Rawalpindi bedroom with a large window needs more than a north-facing room of the same size. Oversizing is as bad as undersizing — the unit short-cycles, never dehumidifies, and the room feels cold and clammy.
Site both units before drilling anything
Indoor unit high on a wall that lets air reach the whole room rather than blowing into a wardrobe. Outdoor unit somewhere with real clearance for airflow and shade from the worst afternoon sun. An outdoor unit boxed into a hot balcony recess loses efficiency every summer afternoon, exactly when you need it.
Keep the pipe short, lagged and properly flared
Every extra metre of pipe costs capacity, and unlagged pipe drips and wastes cooling. Flares are cut and torqued properly rather than over-tightened, and the drain is run with a genuine fall — a drain that backs up into the room is the single most common complaint after a cheap installation.
Vacuum, then release gas, then measure
The system gets a real vacuum to pull out air and moisture before the gas is released. Skipping this is what quietly kills compressors. Then we measure the running current and the temperature difference across the coil and write both down.
What the price covers. PKR 8,000 covers standard fitting of a unit you have bought: bracket, up to about three metres of lagged pipe, drain, vacuum and commissioning. Questions people ask
What tonnage do I actually need?
As a starting point, roughly one ton per 120 to 150 square feet in this climate — then adjust up for a west-facing room, large glazing, a top floor under an exposed roof, or a room that holds several people. A 12x14 bedroom is usually a 1.5 ton. Getting a proper look at the room beats any rule of thumb, and it is free.
Inverter or non-inverter?
Inverter, for anything that runs more than a couple of hours a day. It costs more up front and uses substantially less electricity because it modulates instead of cycling on and off, and at current tariffs that difference pays back within a few summers. Non-inverter still makes sense for a guest room used a few weeks a year.
Why does my new AC cool the room unevenly?
Usually placement rather than the unit. An indoor unit blowing across a wardrobe, into a curtain, or mounted low on the wrong wall leaves half the room untouched. The second cause is oversizing: too much capacity means short cycles that drop the temperature without pulling humidity out, so the room reads cool and feels damp.
