Diagnose electrically before mechanically
Supply voltage, capacitor condition, contactor, thermistors and the indoor board get checked first, because the majority of no-cooling and won't-start faults are electrical and cheap. Questions people ask
The AC trips the breaker. Is the compressor gone?
Usually not. A tripping breaker is most often a failed capacitor, a shorted fan motor, moisture in the outdoor unit after rain, or an undersized supply cable that has been marginal since installation. All four are far cheaper than a compressor, and all four are ruled in or out with a meter in the first fifteen minutes.
Water is dripping into the room. What causes that?
Nearly always the drain: blocked with the algae and dust that build up over a season, or run without enough fall so it backs up. Both are cheap to fix. The other cause is a frozen indoor coil melting all at once, which points back to low gas or a badly blocked filter — so a dripping unit is sometimes a symptom of something else.
Is it worth repairing an old unit?
Depends entirely on what failed. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors and drains are worth fixing on almost anything. A failed compressor on an old non-inverter unit usually is not — you would spend a large share of a replacement on a machine whose other components are equally aged.
