Whether your AC needs a voltage stabiliser
Fit one where the supply genuinely sags — sustained low voltage makes motors draw more current and run hotter, which shortens their life. Many modern inverter units have a wide input range and protect themselves, so check the unit's specification before buying a stabiliser it does not need.

Why low voltage damages a motor
A motor asked to deliver the same work at lower voltage draws more current to compensate, and current is what produces heat in windings. Sustained undervoltage therefore ages the compressor and fan motors even though nothing appears to be wrong. It is a slow failure mode, which is why it goes unnoticed until something stops.
Establish whether your supply actually sags
This is measurable rather than a matter of opinion. Voltage at the socket during peak evening load, compared against a quiet hour, tells you what you are dealing with. Parts of the twin cities have a genuine problem and parts do not, and buying a stabiliser for a supply that is fine is money spent on nothing.
Check the unit's own input range first
Many current inverter units accept a wide input voltage range and shut down protectively outside it, which is most of what a stabiliser was doing. If your unit already does that, adding a stabiliser mainly adds another component to fail. The specification will state the range — read it before buying.
Sizing and siting, if you do fit one
Size it to the unit's actual current draw with headroom for start-up, not to a round number. Site it somewhere ventilated, because it produces heat of its own, and never inside a cupboard with the unit's own cabling. An undersized stabiliser in a hot enclosure is a fault waiting to happen rather than protection.

Often not — many accept a wide input range and cut out protectively below it, which covers the same risk. Check the stated range against what your supply actually does. Where the supply drops below the unit's minimum regularly, a stabiliser stops it repeatedly cutting out, which is a convenience argument as much as a protection one.
What does low voltage actually do to the compressor?
It makes it draw more current for the same work, which heats the windings. Sustained over seasons that shortens motor life without producing any obvious symptom until it fails. This is why the damage is usually attributed to the unit being poor quality rather than to the supply that actually caused it.
Is a stabiliser the same as a UPS?
No. A stabiliser corrects voltage while power is present; it stores nothing and does nothing during an outage. A UPS supplies power when the mains fails. An AC is rarely worth putting on a UPS because of its draw, but a stabiliser is a reasonable purchase where the supply justifies it.
