The AC is sending the electricity bill through the roof
Four causes, in order of how often we find them: a dirty condenser making the unit work harder for less cooling, a non-inverter unit cycling constantly, a room losing cool faster than the unit replaces it, and a thermostat set several degrees lower than it needs to be.

A dirty condenser costs money every hour
When the outdoor coil cannot reject heat, the compressor runs longer and draws more for the same cooling. This is the highest-value maintenance there is here — the difference between a clean and a clogged condenser shows up on the bill within a month, and it is why a pre-season service pays for itself.
Inverter against non-inverter, at Pakistani tariffs
A non-inverter unit runs at full power then stops, repeatedly, and each restart draws heavily. An inverter unit modulates and settles into a low steady draw. At current tariffs the difference across a summer is substantial for a unit running several hours a day, which is why inverter is the honest recommendation for anything beyond occasional use.
The room, not the unit
An uninsulated top-floor room under an exposed roof, single-glazed windows in afternoon sun, and gaps around doors mean the unit is cooling the outdoors. Curtains, a door seal and shade on the worst window often cut consumption more than any change to the AC — and cost far less than replacing it.
Thermostat setting and habit
Each degree lower costs meaningfully more, and setting a unit to its minimum does not cool the room faster — it just runs longer past the point you wanted. A sensible set point with a fan running to move the air feels cooler than a very low set point with still air, and costs a fraction.
Why is my AC using so much electricity?
Is it cheaper to leave the AC on all day or switch it off?
For a room you return to within an hour or two, leaving it at a moderate set point usually costs less than letting the room heat fully and pulling it back down, because the unit works hardest during that pull-down. For a full working day away, switching off wins clearly. The crossover depends on how well the room holds cool.
Does an inverter AC really save that much?
For daily use over several hours, yes — modulating instead of cycling avoids repeated high-draw restarts and holds temperature at a low steady consumption. The saving is smaller for a guest room used a few weeks a year, which is the one case where non-inverter still makes economic sense.
Would servicing actually lower my bill?
If the condenser and coil are dirty, materially — a clogged outdoor coil forces the compressor to run longer for the same result, and that shows up directly in units consumed. If the unit is already clean, servicing protects it but will not change the bill. Measuring current before and after is what tells you which case you are in.
Rather have it done?
A service is a deep clean of both coils, the filters and the drain, plus a set of measurements that show whether the unit is actually healthy. Servicing starts at PKR 3,000, and gas refilling starts at PKR 6,000 — but a unit needing gas has a leak, and refilling without finding it is a yearly bill, not a repair.
