The AC has started making a new noise
The noise names the fault. Rattling is usually loose panels or debris in the outdoor fan. Grinding or squealing is a bearing. A loud hum with no start is a capacitor or a seized motor. Gurgling is normal refrigerant flow, and hissing may not be.

Rattling and vibration
Loose casing screws, a panel resonating, or the outdoor unit's mounting feet worn or unlevel. Debris in the fan guard also rattles. These are the cheapest of all AC faults and often fixable in minutes, but they are worth fixing rather than tolerating — sustained vibration works fixings loose and stresses pipework.
Grinding, squealing and a loud hum
Grinding or squealing points at a failing bearing in the indoor blower or the outdoor fan motor. A loud hum with the unit failing to start is the classic failed-capacitor signature: the motor is being asked to run without its start assistance. Both should be attended promptly, because running a failing motor takes the rest with it.
Which refrigerant noises are normal
A brief gurgle or trickle as the system starts and stops is refrigerant moving and is entirely normal. A continuous hiss, particularly with poor cooling, can indicate a leak or a restriction. The distinction is duration and context — a noise at changeover is expected, one that persists through operation is not.
Clicking and cycling
A regular click at start and stop is the contactor and is normal. Rapid repeated clicking means the unit is trying to start and failing, or cycling on a protection device, and that is a fault. Count the interval: seconds apart is a problem, minutes apart is ordinary operation.
What does it mean when my AC makes a loud noise?
The outdoor unit is much louder than it used to be. Why?
Most often the fan: debris caught in the guard, a blade damaged or out of balance, or a bearing wearing. Occasionally the compressor's mounting rubbers have perished so vibration transmits into the casing. All are worth attending before they progress, and none is expensive relative to a compressor.
Is a hissing sound always a gas leak?
No. Brief hissing or gurgling at start-up and shutdown is refrigerant equalising and is normal. A steady hiss during operation, especially alongside poor cooling and ice on the pipework, is worth investigating — but the noise alone is not a diagnosis, and it should be confirmed with gauges rather than assumed.
Can I just tighten the panels myself?
On the indoor unit, checking that the casing is properly clipped and screwed is reasonable. On the outdoor unit, isolate the power first and do not open the electrical compartment. If the noise persists after the obvious external fixings, it is internal, and that is a job for someone with the unit isolated and the covers off properly.
