PTZ cameras: one moving eye, used properly
A PTZ camera pans, tilts and zooms on command, so a single unit can sweep a yard, a society entrance or a warehouse apron. The trade-off is blunt: it records only where it currently points. Treat a PTZ as the roving eye above a bed of fixed cameras, never as a substitute for them.

Where one earns its cost
Open ground too wide for fixed lenses to cover economically: an I-9 or I-10 industrial yard, a transport yard off the ring road, the entrance plaza of a housing society. With a guard on a joystick or a preset tour running, one PTZ patrols an area that would otherwise need five or six fixed positions, and its zoom pulls in detail none of them could match.
The blind-side problem
Whatever a PTZ is not looking at simply does not exist on the recording. If it is zoomed on the north gate while something happens at the south fence, that footage was never made and no search will find it. This is why the fixed cameras stay: they record everything all the time, and the PTZ exists to investigate and follow, not to be the record.
Tours, presets and auto-tracking
A preset tour cycles the camera through saved positions, which spreads attention rather than multiplying it — weight the tour so the riskiest position gets the most dwell time. Auto-tracking, where the camera locks onto movement, behaves well over an empty night yard and badly at a busy showroom forecourt, where it chases every arriving customer. Configure it to the site, not the brochure.
What is a PTZ camera and do I need one?
Is one PTZ cheaper than several fixed cameras?
Usually not once you price it honestly: the unit costs several fixed cameras, and it needs a stronger mount and often its own power run. For a shop it is the wrong spend. For a yard or a society gate with someone watching, it can be exactly right.
Who actually moves the camera?
A guard at a monitor, a phone app, or an automatic tour. If none of those will exist at your site, you have bought a fixed camera at a PTZ price — better to say so at the survey stage.
