ANPR cameras: reading number plates at the gate
An ANPR camera reads vehicle plates using a narrow field of view, a fast shutter and its own infra-red, then software turns the image into text a barrier or a log can act on. It succeeds or fails on placement: a near head-on angle, controlled speed, plates in fair condition.

Geometry before hardware
The read collapses once the plate is more than about thirty degrees off straight-on, so the camera has to sit low and square to the approach lane. In practice that means a dedicated unit at the barrier whose only job is plates, with a separate overview camera recording the wider scene — the driver, the vehicle colour, what actually happened when a read was missed.
Speed suits a barrier
Capture is dependable at gate speeds — a car slowing for a boom at a Bahria or DHA entrance is the ideal subject. Reading free-flowing traffic on an open road is a different and far more expensive class of equipment, and we say so rather than promise it. For society gates, guest house entrances and petrol pump forecourts, standard ANPR performs well.
What a successful read can do
A plate on the residents' whitelist can raise the barrier without the guard touching anything. Every entry lands in a searchable log with a timestamp, and a plate on a watch list can push an alert to a phone. Standard Islamabad and Punjab issue plates in reasonable condition read reliably; decorative fonts, tinted covers and mud all cost accuracy, which is why the overview camera stays.
How do number plate recognition cameras work?
Does ANPR handle Pakistani plates?
Standard government-issue plates in fair condition, yes. Novelty fonts, plate covers and heavy weathering drop the rate noticeably. We test at your actual gate with your actual traffic before quoting a system, not after installing one.
Can it open the barrier for residents automatically?
Yes — that is its best trick. A whitelisted plate triggers the boom or sliding motor directly. Specify the camera and the gate automation together so the two are wired as one system.
Rather have it done?
Business CCTV is built around the counter, the entrance, the stock area and the back door, with storage long enough to catch problems you only notice at stocktake. Systems for Islamabad marts, pharmacies, schools and offices start at PKR 85,000, and can tie into access control and your point of sale.
