Fault-finding

The touchpad has stopped responding

Check the disable shortcut first — most laptops have a function key that turns the touchpad off and it is pressed accidentally constantly. Then the driver, then whether an external mouse being connected is disabling it automatically. Genuine hardware failure is the least common of the four.

The function key, which is the answer more often than anything

Nearly every laptop has a key combination that disables the touchpad, usually a function key with a touchpad icon. It gets pressed by accident, and the machine gives little feedback that it happened. Pressing it again costs nothing and resolves a genuinely large share of these before anyone opens a settings panel.

Automatic disable with an external mouse

Many systems are configured to switch the touchpad off whenever a mouse is connected, which is helpful until you unplug the mouse somewhere else and the touchpad does not come back. Check that setting before assuming a fault — it is a checkbox, not a repair.

Driver, and what a Windows update did

Touchpad drivers are a common casualty of updates, and the symptom is a pad that worked yesterday and does not today with nothing else changed. Reinstalling the manufacturer's driver rather than the generic one restores gestures and sensitivity that the generic driver does not support.

Then the ribbon connector

If software is ruled out, the touchpad's ribbon cable connecting to the board is the usual hardware cause, particularly on a machine that has been opened before or has taken a knock. Reseating it is often the whole repair; replacement of the pad itself is uncommon.

Why is my laptop touchpad not working?

The touchpad stopped after a Windows update. Is that a coincidence?

Usually not — updates replace drivers, and a generic driver can leave the pad partly or entirely non-functional. Installing the manufacturer's own driver for your model rather than the one Windows chose is the standard fix and it restores gesture support at the same time.

The cursor jumps around while I type. What causes that?

Palm rejection either disabled or too insensitive, so the pad reads your palm as a touch. It is a setting rather than a fault on most machines. Where the setting is already correct, an overly sensitive or slightly damaged pad can cause it, and that is a hardware conversation.

Is a broken touchpad worth repairing?

Reseating a ribbon is quick and cheap, so yes. Replacing the pad assembly itself is a bigger job on many models because it sits under the palm rest. If the machine is otherwise sound and you carry it, it is worth doing; if it lives on a desk with a mouse, many people simply leave it.

Rather have it done?

Laptop and PC repair covers machines that will not power on, overheat, shut down under load, blue-screen or have simply become unusably slow. Diagnosis at our H-15 bench is PKR 1,500, deducted from the repair, and you get a written quote before anything is opened further.
