MPPT or PWM charge controllers
Choose MPPT for any system worth installing. It harvests meaningfully more energy from the same panels, especially in winter and on cold bright mornings, and the price gap no longer justifies PWM on anything beyond a very small array powering a light or a gate.

What each one does with panel voltage
A PWM controller effectively drags the panel down to battery voltage, discarding the difference. An MPPT controller converts the excess voltage into additional current, so energy that PWM throws away reaches the battery. The gap is largest when panel voltage sits well above battery voltage — which is most of the time on a modern array.
When the difference is biggest
Cold, bright conditions raise panel voltage, so an MPPT controller gains most on winter mornings — exactly when a Pakistani system is shortest of energy and the battery most needs charging. In peak summer, with hot panels and voltage sagging, the advantage narrows. The annual figure is what matters, and it favours MPPT clearly.
The wiring flexibility that comes with it
MPPT accepts a higher input voltage, so panels can be wired in series. Higher voltage at lower current means thinner DC cable for the same power and less loss over the run. On a rooftop where the array is far from the inverter, that alone can offset a chunk of the controller's extra cost.
Where PWM is still fine
A single small panel keeping a gate motor, a security light or a garden pump topped up. There the array is tiny, the voltage difference is small, and the controller's cost is a meaningful share of the system. For anything that is genuinely a solar installation rather than a trickle charger, MPPT is the default.

How much more energy does MPPT actually collect?
Meaningfully more over a year, with the gain concentrated in cold bright conditions where panel voltage runs high above battery voltage. The exact figure depends on your array voltage, battery voltage and climate, which is why any single percentage quoted without those is marketing rather than measurement.
Can I upgrade a PWM system to MPPT?
Yes, and it is a straightforward swap in most systems — the controller is a discrete unit. It also often allows rewiring panels in series for a higher, more efficient array voltage, which is where a good part of the improvement comes from. Check the new controller's input limits against the proposed string first.
Is the controller separate from the inverter?
In most hybrid inverters sold here it is built in, and the specification will state whether it is MPPT and what input range it accepts. Standalone controllers appear in off-grid and DC-coupled setups. Either way, the question to ask about a hybrid inverter is what its MPPT input range and current limit are, because those constrain your array design.
Rather have it done?
The inverter and battery bank are where a solar system is won or lost: sizing, ventilation, cabling and protection decide whether the bank lasts eight years or three. A lithium bank with a hybrid inverter installed properly starts near PKR 320,000 for a household essential load.
