Solar for a tube well or farm

One of the strongest cases in the country, and for a reason unique to it: pumping is a load you can move. Water can be pumped whenever the sun is out and stored in a tank, so the crop is irrigated from the tank rather than the pump running on demand — which removes the need for a battery entirely.

Storing water instead of electricity

This is the insight that changes the economics. Every other premises needs a battery to shift generation to when it is needed; a tube well can shift the need to when generation happens. Pump into a tank during daylight, irrigate from the tank. Water storage is a fraction of the cost of equivalent battery storage.

Many sites have no grid to export to

Agricultural connections are often absent, unreliable or expensive, so a large share of these systems are genuinely off-grid rather than grid-tied by preference. That removes the net-metering question and makes the comparison a straight one against diesel, which is where solar's running cost of nothing does its clearest work.

Matching the pump to the array

Pump motors draw a heavy starting current, and the inverter or pump controller has to handle it rather than merely matching the running rating. Dedicated solar pump controllers are designed for this and manage variable output through the day. A general-purpose inverter sized on running load will trip on start-up, which is the commonest fault we see on these systems.

Seasonality cuts both ways

Irrigation demand is highest in the hot months, which is also when generation is highest — a genuinely favourable alignment. Against that, output falls in winter when some crops still need water. Size against the demanding season and accept that a winter shortfall may need a grid or diesel top-up rather than more panels.

Higher to install, then close to nothing to run — no fuel to buy or fetch, no servicing cycle, no theft risk on stored fuel. Against a diesel pump running through an irrigation season the comparison is generally clear, and it improves every time fuel prices move. The main obstacle is the upfront cost, not the arithmetic.

What size array does a tube well need?

It follows the pump's power rating and head, with meaningful headroom for the starting current and for the fact that the array only reaches full output for part of the day. Sizing exactly to the pump's running rating gives a system that pumps for a narrow window around noon and disappoints for the rest of it.

Rather have it done?

On-grid is cheapest and dies with the grid. Off-grid runs independently but needs a battery bank sized for the worst week of the year. Hybrid does both and is what most Islamabad households actually want. Choosing between them changes the price more than any other decision on a solar quote.
