Inverter or non-inverter AC
Choose inverter for anything running more than a couple of hours a day — it modulates instead of cycling, uses substantially less electricity, and pays back the price difference within a few summers at current tariffs. Non-inverter still makes sense for a guest room used a few weeks a year.

What each one does with the compressor
A non-inverter unit runs the compressor at full speed until the room hits the set point, stops, and restarts when it drifts. An inverter unit varies compressor speed to hold the temperature, settling into a low steady draw. Each restart on a non-inverter draws heavily, and across a summer those restarts are where the difference accumulates.
The payback arithmetic at Pakistani tariffs
Take the price difference and divide it by the seasonal running-cost difference at your tariff band. For a unit running several hours daily through a long twin-cities summer, that lands within a few seasons — sooner if you are in a high tariff band, since the saving is taken off the top of the bill.
Comfort, which people notice more than the bill
A non-inverter unit swings the room temperature either side of the set point as it cycles; an inverter holds it steadily. It is also markedly quieter once settled, because the compressor is not repeatedly slamming to full speed. For a bedroom this matters as much as the running cost.
The repair consideration nobody mentions
Inverter units carry more electronics, so a board failure is a real possibility and costs more than a non-inverter's simpler components. Against that, they run gentler duty cycles and tend to last. Buy from a brand with parts availability here — an inverter board that cannot be sourced locally is an expensive stranded asset.
Is an inverter AC worth the extra cost in Pakistan?
Does an inverter AC cool a hot room faster?
Yes, usually — it can run above its rated capacity during pull-down before settling back. The common belief that inverters are slow comes from confusing steady-state operation with pull-down. It is at the holding stage, not the cooling stage, that it runs quietly and cheaply.
Are inverter units more prone to failure?
They have more electronics, so board faults exist that a non-inverter simply cannot have. In practice the gentler duty cycle offsets much of that. The bigger risk is parts availability: an inverter board for a brand with no local presence is slow and expensive to source, which is a purchase decision rather than a reliability one.
Is an inverter AC worth it if load-shedding cuts the power often?
It is unaffected either way — both types restart when power returns. What matters more in an area with frequent cuts is voltage quality on restart, which is a case for a stabiliser regardless of type. The inverter's running-cost advantage is unchanged by outages.
Rather have it done?
AC installation is a sizing decision followed by a plumbing job: tonnage matched to the room, indoor and outdoor units sited for airflow, pipe run kept short and lagged, and the system vacuumed properly before gas is released. Fitting starts at PKR 8,000, and supply-and-fit for a 1.5 ton inverter unit starts near PKR 140,000.
