Analog or IP cameras for a new system

Up to four cameras on short runs, modern analog is the value choice; above eight cameras, on long runs, or where growth is planned, IP costs less over the system's life. In Islamabad terms: a 4-camera 2MP analog package runs PKR 55,000–85,000, while a 4-channel 4MP IP system starts around PKR 110,000.

Analog has quietly caught up

HD-over-coax now carries 5MP, so the old contrast of blurry analog against sharp IP is out of date — though it still gets used to sell rewires nobody needs. A shop in Saddar or an older G-sector house with sound coax in the walls can move to sharp modern cameras on the existing cable, which is the cheapest upgrade in the trade.

Where IP pulls decisively ahead

One network cable per camera carrying power and data, runs up to the switch limit rather than the coax limit, and expansion by patching into a spare port. For a school across two blocks, a software house adding floors, or a housing society gate a few hundred metres from the office, the labour saved on cabling outweighs the higher camera prices.

You do not have to pick once

A hybrid recorder runs existing analog channels and new IP channels side by side. The common Islamabad path is exactly that: keep the working analog cameras running, add IP at the two or three positions that genuinely need more resolution, and migrate the rest only when they fail. Nothing about the first purchase locks you into one technology for good.

Are IP cameras better than analog CCTV?

Will I see the difference on my phone?

Live viewing looks similar — the phone screen and mobile data are the bottleneck. The gap appears when you review recorded footage and try to crop into a face or plate.

Which is cheaper to keep running?

About the same. Analog parts cost less; IP faults diagnose faster because the network reports which camera dropped and when. Power quality kills more of both than technology does.

Rather have it done?

IP camera installation runs each camera on a single Cat6 cable that carries both power and video, delivering 4MP or sharper images that hold detail when you zoom. It suits offices, schools and larger Islamabad homes, and grows cheaply once the recorder and switch are in. Four channels installed start around PKR 110,000.
