IP cameras: what a network camera changes
An IP camera is a network device: video, control and usually power all travel down one Cat6 cable to a switch and network recorder. That means single cable runs, resolution beyond what analogue manages, and cheap expansion once the backbone exists. Offices and software houses that expect to grow are exactly who it suits.

One cable per camera
Power over Ethernet lets the switch feed each camera down the same run that carries its picture, so every position needs one termination instead of two and there is no hunt for a socket near the camera. Through a plaza riser or across a false ceiling in an F-8 office, that halves the joints that can fail and the time spent finding the one that did.
Keep cameras off the office network
Cameras belong on their own switch or VLAN, separated from the point of sale, the guest WiFi and the workstations. Done at configuration time it costs nothing, and it means a compromised camera cannot become a path to the billing PC. For software houses and offices handling client data, we treat this separation as part of the install, not an optional extra.
The internet is optional; the switch is not
Recording is local to the NVR, so a dropped fibre line never stops storage — the internet only matters for viewing from a phone. The real cost of an IP system sits in the switch and recorder, and the trick is sizing both with spare ports and channels at the start. After that, every camera you add later is comparatively cheap, which is the whole economic case for IP.
What is an IP camera?
Do IP cameras stop when the internet drops?
No. They record to the recorder on your own network regardless of the internet line. Only remote viewing pauses until the connection returns, which is worth knowing before anyone sells you a cloud-only setup.
Can IP and analogue run together?
Yes, on a hybrid recorder. It is the standard upgrade path: keep the analogue cameras that still work, add a 4MP IP unit at the entrance, replace the rest as they fail.
