PoE: one cable for power and picture
Power over Ethernet pushes DC power down the same network cable that carries a camera's video, so each camera needs one run and no nearby socket. Fewer joints, simpler fault-finding, and one UPS at the switch keeps every camera alive through an outage — worth having even on Islamabad's relatively kind grid.

Fewer joints to corrode
Separate power and video wiring doubles the number of terminations sitting outdoors through monsoon damp, and corroded joints are exactly where intermittent faults live — the picture that flickers on humid mornings and behaves by the time anyone arrives. PoE halves the joint count per camera. Over the ten-year life of an outdoor system, that difference shows up directly in how often somebody has to climb a ladder with a multimeter.
The 100-metre rule and the power budget
Standard PoE carries about 100 metres per run; beyond that you need an extender or a switch positioned closer to the far cameras, planned from the building's actual dimensions. Switches also have a total wattage budget. When infra-red loads switch on at dusk, a cheap switch can tip over it — the symptom is cameras dropping out at night. We add up the watts before choosing the hardware.
One UPS protects the whole system
Because PoE concentrates every camera's power at the switch, a single modest UPS on the switch and recorder carries the whole system through IESCO interruptions and monsoon trips, with nothing else to buy or wire. Try achieving the same with a plug-in adaptor hidden behind every camera and you will not get close. For the twin cities this is PoE's most practical advantage — more useful, day to day, than the tidier cable run it is usually sold on.
What is PoE and why does it matter for cameras?
Can existing office cabling carry cameras?
If it is Cat5e or better and properly terminated, usually yes. We test each run before committing to reuse, because one marginal cable produces months of intermittent call-outs that a day of fresh cabling would have avoided.
What size UPS covers a PoE system?
A small line-interactive unit runs a four-to-eight camera switch and recorder for one to three hours — enough for the outages the twin cities actually see. Longer autonomy is a bigger battery, not different equipment.
Rather have it done?
IP camera installation runs each camera on a single Cat6 cable that carries both power and video, delivering 4MP or sharper images that hold detail when you zoom. It suits offices, schools and larger Islamabad homes, and grows cheaply once the recorder and switch are in. Four channels installed start around PKR 110,000.
