CCTV power supplies: the quiet cause of most faults
More CCTV faults trace back to the power supply than to any other part. The classic sign: cameras fine all day, dead or flickering after dusk, when infra-red LEDs pull extra current a marginal adaptor cannot hold. A correctly rated, individually fused supply costs little and prevents most repair call-outs.

The night-time giveaway
Infra-red illuminators draw far more current than daytime running, so a supply with no headroom holds up until sunset and then sags. Owners describe it as the camera dying at night, and replacement cameras get sold for it. Voltage drop and summer dips
A long, thin power run loses voltage before it reaches the camera, and June's grid dips on loaded IESCO feeders push a marginal setup over the edge. The fixes are physical: heavier gauge cable, a supply positioned nearer the camera, or PoE, which moves the problem to a properly engineered switch. A bigger adaptor at the wrong end of a thin cable fixes nothing.
Shared adaptors and heat
One adaptor feeding four cameras is cheap right up until one camera develops a short and takes the other three with it. A fused distribution box isolates each output so a single fault stays single. And keep supplies ventilated and out of direct sun — a sealed box on a rooftop in June cooks its electronics faster than any load ever will.

Why does my camera work by day and fail at night?
Almost always the power supply. Infra-red load at dusk pulls the voltage down and the camera resets or dies until morning. It is one of the cheapest CCTV repairs there is, and one of the most often misdiagnosed as a dead camera.
Is PoE better than 12-volt adaptors?
For IP systems, yes: power is centralised, each port is protected, and one UPS backs everything. Analogue systems get most of the same benefit from a single fused multi-way supply instead of scattered adaptors.
