Second-hand CCTV: what is safe to buy and what is not
Used cameras, brackets and power supplies are usually fair value; used recorders are the gamble. Before paying, confirm the admin password can be reset, check the hard drive's power-on hours, and verify the model still receives firmware. Budget for a fresh drive — it is the part that is genuinely worn.

Where the risk actually sits
A surveillance drive that has already written continuously for three years is near the end regardless of how clean the recorder looks, so read its power-on hours before you value the deal — assume the drive is a consumable. A recorder whose admin password cannot be reset is worth nothing, and one the manufacturer stopped updating cannot be secured for remote viewing. Those three checks take twenty minutes and filter out most bad buys.
Shopping the twin-city used market
The stalls around Rawalpindi Saddar and the online classifieds carry plenty of pulled-out systems, often from shops that closed or upgraded. Insist on seeing the unit powered, logged in and recording before money moves — a photograph proves nothing about a recorder. Ask why it was removed; an upgrade is a good answer, a lightning strike is not. Grey-imported units with no local warranty should be priced accordingly.
What ages well
Cameras themselves age slowly if the seals are intact, and brackets, junction boxes and unused cable barely age at all — that is where used saves real money. For a tight budget we sometimes quote tested reconditioned cameras on a new recorder and new drive, with the age and replaced parts written on the invoice. Where a used unit is the wrong call for the site, we say so and quote new.

Plan on a new surveillance-grade drive with any used recorder; capacity decides the price, and a fresh drive usually costs less than the footage you would lose when a worn one fails mid-retention.
Can old cameras join a new system?
Often, through a hybrid recorder that accepts analogue and IP together. Bring model numbers to the free survey and we will tell you which units are worth keeping and which are not.
