Night vision: reading infra-red ratings honestly
Treat a camera's infra-red rating as a visibility figure, not an identification one. A 30-metre-rated camera shows movement at thirty metres and a usable face at perhaps twelve to fifteen. Plan positions from the shorter distance, and add a modest light where you can — it beats extra infra-red every time.

Why the box figure misleads
Manufacturers measure infra-red range against a reflective target in clear air, and it tells you where something is visible, not where it is identifiable. Identification needs pixels and contrast, both of which fall away with distance. The working rule that survives contact with real sites: halve the printed number for anything you need to recognise, and design the camera layout from that.
Humid air and dirty glass
July's humid haze scatters infra-red before it reaches the subject, and a film of dust or pollen on the housing reflects it straight back into the lens — the classic milky bloom in the middle of a night image. Cleaning the glass restores more night range than any equipment upgrade, which is why it is the first item on our maintenance checklist rather than the last.
Light is the cheap upgrade
One LED bulb over the gate of a DHA villa improves night footage more than swapping the camera, and it deters on its own. Enough ambient light also lets cameras hold colour after dark, which makes clothing and vehicles far easier to describe. White-light cameras do the same job actively — right over a yard, wrong pointed anywhere near a neighbour's window.

Why is my night image washed out in the middle?
Infra-red is bouncing back off something close — a wall edge, a web, dust on the glass. Clean the housing or adjust the aim. It is almost never the camera itself, so do not replace one for this.
Should I buy colour night vision cameras?
Where colour matters after dark — entrances, forecourts, driveways with some light — yes. On a pitch-dark boundary, conventional infra-red is the more dependable choice, and a small added lamp closes most of the gap anyway.
