The picture has slowly turned hazy
A dirty dome cover or lens window sits behind most gradually blurring pictures — dust, monsoon rain-spotting and cobwebs lay down a film over months. Genuine focus faults are much rarer. One caution before cleaning: thinner and spirit fog a polycarbonate dome permanently, and a past wipe with the wrong fluid is itself a frequent cause.

Step 1: clean with water only
Take a soft cloth, dampen it with plain water, and wipe the cover or lens window. Nothing stronger. This free step resolves the majority of hazy-picture complaints outright, so do it before suspecting the camera. Cameras facing a markaz road, a construction plot or an open forecourt collect film fastest and are the ones to reach first.
Step 2: inspect the cover in low light
Shine a torch across the dome at an angle. A milky bloom that stays after cleaning means the polycarbonate itself has hazed — from age, sun, or a solvent wipe — and no amount of further cleaning brings it back. The fix is a replacement cover, which costs a fraction of a new camera, and the night picture recovers along with the day one.
Step 3: check the focus lock
Varifocal cameras drift if the lock ring was left hand-tight at installation, and a year of heat cycling and vibration slowly walks the focus off. If the image is soft across the whole frame after a clean cover, refocus and tighten the lock properly. Done once, correctly, it stays put — this is a short job on a service visit.
