The USB ports have stopped working

Check whether all ports are dead or only one. All ports dead points at the controller or a driver; one port dead points at physical damage to that port. Test with a device you know works, because a failed flash drive tests as a failed port and the two get confused constantly.

Test with a known-good device

Try a device that definitely works elsewhere, ideally something with its own light. A dead flash drive presents exactly as a dead port, and a phone charging cable that has failed presents as a port with no power. Establishing that the device is good removes half the possible explanations immediately.

One port or all of them

A single dead port is almost always physical — the connector's internal contacts spread or break after years of insertions, or something was forced in at an angle. All ports dead at once points at the controller, a driver problem, or a power management setting switching them off.

Power management and drivers

Windows can suspend USB controllers to save power and occasionally fails to resume them, which produces ports that work after a restart and stop later. Disabling selective suspend for the controller and reinstalling the chipset driver addresses the common software causes.

The physical repair

A damaged port is a board-level job — the connector is soldered to the board and replacing it means desoldering and refitting. It is entirely doable and it is chip-level bench work rather than a parts swap. On a machine where only one of several ports has failed, many people reasonably choose to live with it.

Why are my laptop USB ports not working?

One port works and the others do not. What does that mean?

It usually means the working port is on a different controller or a different rail from the failed ones, which points at a controller or a power problem rather than physical damage to three ports at once. That is diagnosable on the bench and often repairable without replacing anything large.

The port works but charges my phone very slowly. Why?

Standard ports supply limited current, and only some are designed for higher-current charging. A slow charge on a normal port is expected behaviour rather than a fault. If a port that used to charge quickly now does not, that is worth checking as a genuine change.

Is a broken USB port worth repairing?

If it is the only one, or the machine is otherwise sound and you rely on it, yes — it is bench work rather than a board replacement and priced accordingly. Where several ports remain and one has failed, a powered hub is a legitimate and much cheaper answer, and we will say so.

Chip-level repair fixes the board itself — power rails, charging circuits, failed components — instead of replacing it. It is the difference between a PKR 12,000 repair and a PKR 60,000 board, and it starts with a schematic and a meter rather than with guesswork. Bench inspection is PKR 3,000.
