Worried someone else can see your cameras
An unchanged default password sits behind almost every compromised CCTV system we are called to. The signs: user accounts nobody created, a camera turning by itself, altered settings, or a recorder that has become sluggish. Change the admin password first, remove unknown accounts, update firmware, then close any direct internet exposure.

Open the user list and login history
Start on the recorder's account page. Every brand ships with a single admin account, so anything extra that neither you nor your installer created is direct evidence of a problem. Most recorders also keep a login log showing the time and source address of each connection. A login at three in the morning from an address you cannot place settles the question faster than any other check, and it takes about a minute to look.
Change credentials before updating anything
Set a new admin password used nowhere else, delete every account you cannot vouch for, and only then apply the latest firmware — in that order, because updating a compromised recorder first can carry an intruder's account straight through the update. Repeat the exercise on the mobile app and on the router's own admin page. A router still wearing its default login quietly undoes everything you fixed on the recorder.
Close the door it came through
Most break-ins arrive through port forwarding: the recorder parked directly on the public internet, where automated scanners find it within days of going live. Switch to the manufacturer's P2P cloud connection or a VPN instead. Both run happily on the PTCL and fiber connections common across the sectors, both survive router changes better, and neither leaves an open port advertising your recorder to every scanner on earth.

Should I replace the whole system after a breach?
Only if the recorder no longer receives firmware updates. A supported recorder with fresh credentials and no port forwarding is properly secure again; an abandoned one can never be patched, and replacing it is the honest advice.
