Playback stutters or freezes
A hard drive developing bad sectors is the first thing to rule out when playback stutters — a surveillance drive slows down noticeably before it finally dies. If playback runs smoothly on the recorder's own screen but chokes on your phone, the bottleneck is upload bandwidth instead, and the fix is a stream setting rather than hardware.

Step 1: test playback at the recorder
Play the same footage on the monitor connected to the recorder itself. Smooth there but choppy on the phone means the drive is healthy and the problem is the connection out of the building. Stuttering in both places puts the drive or the recorder in the frame. This one comparison splits the diagnosis cleanly and takes five minutes, so always do it first.
Step 2: run the drive health check
Most recorders offer a SMART or health test under storage settings — run it. A drive throwing bad sectors reads slowly long before it stops recording, so stuttering playback is often the earliest warning you will ever get. Acting on it now means a planned drive swap with the footage intact; ignoring it means finding out during an incident, with the evidence half-readable.
Step 3: put remote viewing on the substream
Remote playback should use the camera's lower-resolution substream; set to the main stream, three or four high-resolution channels will bury a typical uplink, fibre or not. Check the app's stream setting per channel. Viewing one camera at a time is the quick test — if a single channel plays cleanly and four together crawl, bandwidth is your whole answer.

Why does it get worse the more channels I open?
Each open channel multiplies the load on both the drive and the connection. If one channel plays fine and several together stall, volume — not a fault — is the explanation.
