The recorder will not power on
A failed power adaptor is the usual cause when a recorder shows no lights at all; the recorder itself outlives its 12 V brick far more often than not. A recorder that starts and then keeps restarting is a different fault — suspect a failing hard drive, or heat from a sealed cupboard through an Islamabad summer.

Step 1: substitute a known-good adaptor
Borrow or buy a matching adaptor and try it before anything else. External bricks fail constantly; recorders rarely do. Two minutes with a spare separates a few-hundred-rupee part from a real repair, and it is the first thing we do on arrival anyway. Match the voltage and current rating printed on the original — an underrated substitute will boot the recorder and then drop it once the drive spins up.
Step 2: boot with the hard drive unplugged
A recorder that powers on and then cycles — boots, runs a minute, restarts — is often being dragged down by a dying drive. Disconnect the drive and power up again. A clean boot without it convicts the drive, which is replaceable without losing the recorder. Export anything important before the old drive is handled further, because a drive on its way out does not offer many more chances.
Step 3: look at where it lives
A recorder shut inside an airless counter cupboard will overheat and cut out through June and July, then behave in winter, which makes the fault look random. Give it open shelf space or ventilate the cupboard, and clear the dust from its vents while you are there. Heat also takes years off the drive, so this one change protects the footage as well as the box.

Is my footage gone if the recorder has to be replaced?
Usually not. The recordings sit on the drive, not in the recorder, and the drive frequently transplants into a compatible unit. Tell us the footage matters before work starts and we plan around it.
Is an old recorder worth repairing?
Past five or six years, and once firmware updates have dried up, replacement is generally the better spend — especially for a recorder that is reachable over the internet and can no longer be patched.
Rather have it done?
