Fault-finding

The recorder runs very hot

Warm is normal; too hot to rest a hand on is not, and the likely cause is a sealed cupboard with no airflow. Heat rarely crashes a recorder outright — it kills the hard drive early instead and takes your footage with it. Ventilation is a free fix worth making today.

Get air moving around it

Recorders tucked into sealed cabinets — standard practice in shops that sensibly want the box out of reach — cook slowly through an Islamabad June and July. Keep clearance around every vent, or add ventilation holes at the top and bottom of the cupboard door so convection can work. Enclosed is perfectly fine; airtight is the problem, and summer is what exposes the difference between the two.

Clean the fan and the dust

The internal fan clogs long before it stops turning, and a clogged fan moves no air while sounding completely normal. Dust load in the planned sectors is lighter than out toward Tarnol or Adiala Road, but two years is still enough to blanket a circuit board. Cleaning takes ten minutes inside a service visit and restores the cooling the designer assumed the recorder would always have.

Watch the drive, not the box

The hard drive is what heat actually kills: a drive running hot dies in its second summer instead of its fifth, usually without warning. Where the recorder reports drive temperature, keep it under roughly 50°C. If the unit stays hot despite clear airflow, the fan has failed or the recorder is nearing the end — both cheap to confirm on a visit, and far cheaper than the lost footage.

Is it a problem that my CCTV recorder gets hot?

Should I switch the recorder off overnight to cool it?

No — nights are when premises are empty and recording matters most. Fix the ventilation instead. A recorder is designed to run continuously provided the air around it moves.

Does heat explain my short-lived hard drives?

Very often. A drive dying every couple of years in a hot cupboard is a cooling problem wearing a storage disguise. Ventilate first, then fit the replacement drive.

Rather have it done?

CCTV maintenance is a scheduled check that your cameras still focus, your recorder still writes, your hard drive still has life in it and your phone app still logs in. Monsoon humidity and summer heat are what quietly kill Islamabad systems. Annual cover for a shop or house starts at PKR 15,000.
