Size the paper to the receipt you actually print
80mm is standard for a mart or restaurant receipt with item lines. 58mm is narrower, cheaper on rolls and fine for a pharmacy or a service counter printing three lines. Choosing the narrow one and then needing item detail means buying the printer twice.
Insist on an auto-cutter for volume counters
A tear-bar printer is cheaper and perfectly good at fifty receipts a day. Past a couple of hundred it becomes the counter's bottleneck and the tear gets ragged, which customers notice. The cutter is most of the price difference and it is the part worth paying for.
Wire the printer, and the drawer through it
The cash drawer opens from the printer's kick port, not from the PC, so the drawer only opens when a receipt actually prints. That single wiring choice is a real internal control — it ties every drawer opening to a printed transaction.
Set the template and test a full roll
Shop name, address, tax line if you file one, and a legible item block. Then we run a full roll through under load, because a printer that jams at the end of a roll only shows that fault at the end of a roll.

Questions people ask
Why do thermal receipts fade?
Because the print is heat on coated paper, not ink — it fades with sunlight, heat and time, and cheap rolls fade fastest. For anything a customer may bring back months later, buy better rolls and keep your own copy digitally in the software rather than relying on the paper. A receipt kept in a car dashboard in a Rawalpindi June is unreadable within weeks.
Is the auto-cutter really worth the extra?
Above a couple of hundred receipts a day, yes — it is the difference between a two-second and a six-second end to every sale, and a ragged tear looks careless. Below fifty receipts a day it is money better spent on the scanner. It is the one part of the counter where the volume genuinely decides.
Can one printer serve two tills?
Technically yes over the network, practically no. Two operators printing to one machine means receipts interleaving and customers handed the wrong one. A printer is the cheapest part of a second till — do not share it.
