The fan has become loud or is making a new noise
Loud but smooth means the fan is working hard, usually because the heatsink is clogged or something is running in the background. Grinding, rattling or an intermittent buzz means the fan itself — a worn bearing or a blade catching. The first is cleaning, the second is a part.

Separate working-hard from failing
A fan spinning fast produces a smooth rush of air. A failing fan grinds, rattles, or buzzes intermittently as a blade catches. The character of the noise is the diagnosis: one means the cooling system is struggling, the other means the fan has a mechanical fault. They lead to different repairs.
Check what is running before opening anything
A background process pinning the processor makes the fan run flat out for entirely legitimate reasons. Open the task manager and look at sustained processor use with the machine idle. Windows update, indexing, or a browser tab doing something unexpected are all common and none of them is a hardware fault.
Then the heatsink
If nothing is running and the fan is still working hard, the heatsink is clogged and the fan is compensating for airflow it cannot achieve. This is the overheating fault at an earlier stage — noise now, shutdowns later. Cleaning it resolves both and is inexpensive preventive work.
Replacing the fan
A worn bearing gets worse and eventually seizes, at which point the machine overheats regardless of how clean the heatsink is. Fans are inexpensive and readily available for most models, and replacement is routine bench work. It is worth doing at the noise stage rather than waiting for the shutdown stage.

Is a loud fan damaging the laptop?
The noise itself is not, but what it usually indicates is. A fan running flat out because the heatsink is clogged means the machine is running hotter than it should, and sustained heat shortens the life of everything around it. Treat it as an early warning rather than a nuisance.
The fan runs constantly even when idle. Why?
Either something is genuinely running in the background, or the heatsink is clogged enough that the machine cannot reach a temperature where the fan can slow down. Check processor usage at idle first, because that distinguishes the two in a few seconds and one of them costs nothing.
Can I replace the fan myself?
On some models it is straightforward and on others the fan is under the board and requires full disassembly. The bigger risk is that a fan replacement done without renewing thermal paste leaves the machine running hot anyway. If the machine is open, both jobs should happen together.
