The laptop gets hot and shuts down

The machine is protecting itself. In this climate the cause is almost always a heatsink packed solid with dust and thermal paste that has dried out — one of the cheapest repairs there is, and one of the most commonly misdiagnosed as a failing processor or a virus.

Why it shuts down rather than slows

Modern processors throttle first, so the machine goes sluggish under load before it stops. A hard shutdown means the temperature crossed the protection threshold. That sequence — slow, then hot, then off — is the signature of a thermal problem rather than a software one, and it is worth noticing which stage you are at.

Dust is the cause more than anything else

The heatsink fins clog with a felt of dust that blocks airflow completely while the fan keeps spinning, so the machine sounds like it is cooling and is not. Our dust load makes this faster here than in most places. Opening the machine and clearing the fins is often the entire repair.

Thermal paste dries out

The paste between processor and heatsink degrades over years and stops transferring heat efficiently. Renewing it is routine on any machine opened for cleaning, and on a machine several years old it makes a measurable difference on its own. A repair that cleans the dust and leaves old paste has done half the job.

Then the fan itself, and the surface it sits on

A fan with a worn bearing spins slower than rated and moves less air, sometimes while still sounding normal. And a laptop used on a bed or a cushion has its intake blocked from underneath — a genuinely common cause that no repair fixes, because the machine is fine and the habit is not.

In this climate, roughly once a year for a machine in daily use, and more often in a dusty environment or a workshop. It is inexpensive preventive work that avoids the shutdowns entirely, and the same visit renews thermal paste, which no amount of external cleaning can do.

Can I just blow compressed air into the vents?

It helps a little and it is not a substitute. Blowing air in from outside often pushes the dust felt deeper into the fins rather than removing it, and it does nothing for dried thermal paste. Proper cleaning means opening the machine and clearing the heatsink physically.

Is a cooling pad worth buying?

It helps most where the intake is underneath and the machine is used on soft surfaces, because it guarantees clearance. It is not a fix for a clogged heatsink — it is masking a problem that will get worse. Clean the machine first, then decide whether the pad adds anything.
