Fault-finding

The laptop has become unusably slow

Check the hardware before reinstalling anything. A failing mechanical hard drive, insufficient memory, or heat causing throttling account for most of it — and reinstalling Windows on top of any of those buys you a fast week before it returns.

Look at disk activity first

Open the task manager and watch the disk column under normal use. A mechanical drive pinned near a hundred percent while barely transferring data is failing or simply too slow for a modern system. This single observation explains more slow laptops than every software cause combined, and an SSD transforms the machine.

Then memory pressure

If memory is consistently near capacity the system is swapping to disk constantly, which is slow even on an SSD and catastrophic on a mechanical drive. A browser with many tabs and a modern operating system will do this on 4GB. Adding memory is inexpensive and is the second most effective upgrade after storage.

Rule out thermal throttling

A machine that is quick when cold and slow after twenty minutes is throttling, not degrading. That is the overheating fault wearing a different mask, and the fix is cleaning and thermal paste rather than anything to do with software. The pattern — fine at first, slow later — is the tell.

Only then look at software

Startup programs, a browser carrying dozens of extensions, several security products fighting each other, or genuine malware. All are real causes and all are worth checking. They just come after the hardware, because software cleanup on a failing drive is work you will repeat within a month.

Why has my laptop got so slow?

Will an SSD really make that much difference?

On a machine still running a mechanical drive, more than any other single upgrade — boot, application launch and general responsiveness all transform. It is a bigger improvement than a processor generation, costs a fraction, and it is the first thing to spend on when a budget is tight.

Should I just reinstall Windows?

Sometimes, but check the hardware first. A reinstall on a failing drive, an overheating machine or one short of memory buys you a fast week. If the drive tests healthy, memory is adequate and thermals are fine, then a clean rebuild genuinely helps and is a reasonable next step.

How much memory does a laptop actually need?

For a browser-heavy workflow with office applications, 16GB keeps things comfortable for years; 8GB is workable and 4GB is the reason many machines feel slow regardless of anything else. Check what the board supports before buying, because some machines have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded.

Rather have it done?

Laptop and PC repair covers machines that will not power on, overheat, shut down under load, blue-screen or have simply become unusably slow. Diagnosis at our H-15 bench is PKR 1,500, deducted from the repair, and you get a written quote before anything is opened further.
