Fault-finding

The laptop restarts on its own

A restart with no blue screen usually means power or heat rather than software — the machine lost stability and reset rather than crashing. Check thermals under load, then the charger and battery, then memory. A machine that restarts only under load is almost always thermal.

Note when it happens

Under gaming or video export, on battery only, when the charger is moved, or apparently at random. Each pattern names a different suspect: load points at heat or power delivery, battery-only points at the battery, and movement points at the DC jack. This observation is worth more than any test.

Heat under sustained load

If it restarts a few minutes into anything demanding, the machine is reaching its protection threshold and resetting. Same underlying cause as an overheating shutdown — clogged heatsink, dried thermal paste, a fan turning slower than rated. Cleaning resolves a large share of these outright.

Power delivery and the battery

An underpowered or failing charger cannot supply peak demand, so the machine browns out and resets under load while running fine when idle. A degraded battery does the same on battery power. Testing with a known-good charger of the correct wattage separates these quickly.

Then memory and storage

Faulty memory can cause resets as well as blue screens, and a failing drive can hang the system into a reset. Both are testable rather than guessable. If thermals and power are clean, this is where the diagnosis goes next rather than into a reinstall.

Why does my laptop keep restarting by itself?

It only restarts when I play games or edit video. Why?

Because those are the only times the machine draws peak power and generates peak heat. That pattern points squarely at thermals or power delivery rather than software — a machine with a clogged heatsink is perfectly stable browsing and unstable the moment it is asked to work.

Could a virus cause random restarts?

It can, but it is well down the list. Malware more usually causes slowness, pop-ups or network activity than clean resets. Check heat and power first, because those are both more likely and more damaging if left. A scan is worth running, just not first.

Is a restarting laptop losing my data?

Each unexpected reset risks corrupting whatever was being written at that moment, and repeated resets on a failing drive accelerate the damage. Back up now rather than after diagnosis. If the drive turns out to be the cause, that backup is the difference between an inconvenience and a recovery job.

Rather have it done?

Laptop and PC repair covers machines that will not power on, overheat, shut down under load, blue-screen or have simply become unusably slow. Diagnosis at our H-15 bench is PKR 1,500, deducted from the repair, and you get a written quote before anything is opened further.
