The laptop powers on but the screen stays black
Fans spin and lights come on, but nothing appears. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle: if you can faintly see the desktop, the backlight has failed and the panel is fine. If not, connect an external monitor — that single test splits a screen fault from a board fault.

The torch test, which costs nothing
Hold a bright torch close to the screen at an angle in a dark room. If you can make out a faint image, the panel and the graphics are working and only the backlight has failed — often an inverter or a backlight circuit rather than the whole panel. If the screen is genuinely blank, the fault is further back.
External monitor splits the diagnosis
Plug into HDMI or whatever the machine offers. A picture on the external display means the board and graphics are fine and the fault is the panel, its cable, or the hinge where that cable flexes. No picture on either display points at memory, graphics or the board, and that changes the repair entirely.
Reseat the memory
A memory module that has crept out of its slot is a classic no-display fault, and it produces exactly this symptom with the machine otherwise appearing healthy. Reseating it, or testing with one module at a time where there are two, is a five-minute check that resolves a real share of these.
Then the display cable and the hinge
The cable running from board to panel passes through the hinge and flexes every time the lid opens. Over years it wears, and the tell is a picture that appears or disappears as the lid moves. That is a cable replacement rather than a panel replacement, and it is far cheaper.

How do I know if it is the screen or the motherboard?
The external monitor test. A picture on an external display proves the board, the memory and the graphics are working, so the fault is the panel, the display cable or the hinge. No picture on either means the fault is on the board side. That one test saves guessing and it costs nothing.
The picture comes and goes when I move the lid. What is that?
Almost certainly the display cable wearing where it passes through the hinge. It is a common failure on any laptop that has been opened and closed for years, and it is a cable replacement rather than a screen replacement — a much smaller job than the symptom suggests.
Could it be the graphics chip?
It can be, particularly on machines with a discrete GPU that has run hot for years, and it presents as no display on either screen. It is a board-level repair and the honest answer is that some of these are worth doing and some are not, depending on the machine. We measure before quoting either way.
